Photo Diary: at Home in Black and White

Film photography by Yasmin Qureshi

Film photography is something I've been happy to be getting back into now that university is over. I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd wanted to in my first year of uni and I think it's because of the kinds of projects we had been set! I was more interested in shooting digital in the studio.

In the final few months of uni photographer Sian Davey came in to give a talk to my classmates. When I spoke to her later on she suggested that I take photos at home of my family to make my projects more personal. It's something I hadn't thought of before. I spend the majority of my time hating living in this house, so why would I want to document it?!

When I started to shoot at home I found it challenging to take 'good photos' at first, but soon I noticed my eyes started to train themselves to look out for certain moments that I'd want to photograph. As I began to pinpoint these moments, I realised it's not always miserable for me to live in this house (just the majority of the time - sorry fam).

I've now shot a roll on black and white and another on colour film. I'll share the colour one in another post, but in comparison I feel that B&W is my favourite type of film to shoot with because it's just so simple and there are no distractions from the moment within the frame.

These are a small selection of the B&W photos, shot between 25th March til 7th May 2017.
